Transferable Skills/Experiences to Highlight
- Teamwork/Interpersonal: Focus as a team and work together to reach goals for the season/year
- Time Management: Participate in a full-time role which includes practicing, weight training, traveling and competing while balancing class work, study hall, and tutoring
- Motivation (Self and Others): Recognize personal strengths and weaknesses to work efficiently towards individual and team goals; raise team morale and spirit during stressful situations
- Mentoring/Leadership: Mentor younger teammates to ease their transition into college athletics and academics
- Resilience: Win or lose, pushing until the end of the time clock
- Flexibility: Adapt to current situation by playing multiple roles or positions; running multiple track events or playing different positions when needed etc.
- Coachability/Communication: Able to give and receive feedback, learn from mistakes and move forward; develop oral and listening skills
- Attention to Detail: Follow small plays that can make or break a game/meet
- Problem Solving/Analytics/Strategy: Develop strategy to advance the teams’ goals by studying the opponent or developing plays; making quick decisions during competitions
- Goal Oriented: Take on challenges head on and overcome hurdles in fitness tests, practices, or competitions
- Discipline/Responsibility: Committed to put full effort into school work, practices, and competitions; adhere to all team rules and guidelines established
Key Considerations
- When possible, quantify experience (number of hours spent in practice, games per season, students mentored, etc.)
- Start each bullet point with a strong action verb (try not to use the same action verb twice)
- Think about how these skills have shaped you and are transferable to the working world
- Include effective and relevant keywords, industry terms, etc.
